This is why companies like Apple hide their coolest jobs from you

This is why companies like Apple hide their coolest jobs from youThis is why companies like Apple hide their coolest jobs from youDid you find your current position from a job deutsche post aging or by word of mouth? Are you having trouble looking for a new job because positions are hidden? Come discuss atLadders Facebook Group, The Climb. As any job-seekers suspect, its no secret that many job listings are secret. In fact, the majority of American job ads exist in a shadow world where few people ever get to see them. Some job analysts even estimate that as many as 80% of jobs go unpublicized.Even worse? Its not an inefficiency in the job market. Some of Americas biggest and best companies hide their best jobs from you on purpose. On Friday, ZDNet cybersecurity reporterschwupps Whittaker found this out for himself. Using a traffic analyzer, Whittaker said he was monitoring iPhone app data when he noticed that some of the data was connecting to one, repeated web address. Curious, Whitta ker typed the URL into a browser, and found something unexpected - a job listing.https//twitter.com/zackwhittaker/status/898646739657379840Hey there You found us, the listing begins. We are looking for talented engineer to develop a critical infrastructure component.Once Whitaker found it, Apple took the job listing underground again. The website announcing the Apple engineer job has since been pulled and now leads to a error page. You can see an archived version of the adhere.Although Whittaker maintains that there was little proficiency needed to find the page, you do need technical expertise beyond Googling to find the ad. It take active curiosity of Apples inner workings to find the listing.Importantly, that curiosity is what companies are looking for. Companies dont want a huge volume of applicants. For employers who hide jobs like this, its a way of weeding out passive job applicants mass-emailing their resume. If a job seeker finds the unpublicized job listing on the companys servers, it demonstrates that theyre actively engaged and curious about what the company is doing.Companies dont want to know what seats youve sat in and what titles you have held. They want to know what kind of problems you can solve for them.Finding a hidden job listing shows that youre actively curiousThis is not the first time that a tech giant has hidden job listings. In 2015, Max Rosett wrote about how he typed coding terms into Googles search browser and one of the search results asked if he was up for a challenge? Rosett was. Over the course of several weeks, he completed a series of puzzles and problems that eventually led to a job offer, which he accepted. Rosett was a fan of the unusual job hunt, calling it a brilliant recruiting tacticthey made me feel important while doing so, Rosett wrote.Puzzles arent the greatest recruiting strategyWhile most people can see the appeal of a scavenger hunt, its a deeply flawed idea that the best candidates are mystical magi searching for hidden mysteries, and who will swoop in with a wand to fix all a companys problems. For instance, Google made a name for itself in the engineering world with its famous mind-bending puzzles that few people could solve. The only problem? The company eventually admitted the puzzles were a total waste of time.Who gets left out of hidden job listingsIts not just hidden listings. Companies create different kinds of social puzzles to limit candidate pools elaborate tryouts, multiple interviews, and infamously, crazy interview questions that purport to expose your very soul. The secret that many companies know Its all haphazard. Finding good candidates is often a matter of chance, and running candidates through elaborate hoops only gives managers the illusion of control over a process thats as bewildering to them as it is to you.As a result, hiding a job listing may not actually find the best people, any more than IQ tests or SAT scores do. People may be good at certain kinds of tests - or at trawling the internet - but that doesnt make them great workers or teammates.Even more worrisome is that clever little job-hiding tactics designed as in-jokes for a few people could leave out great candidates. If youre a boss and you rely on word-of-mouth to find your next hire, you are limiting your candidates to only the people you know and the people your friends know. The best candidate is not always the son of an acquaintance or the friend of a friend. That echo chamber is why critics of unpublicized hiring note that it prevents inclusive, diverse hiring practices that lead to better products and better teams.Job descriptions matter. Start with having one thats publicly available, Stacy-Marie Ishmael wrote in a Medium post that criticized the practice of unpublished job listings. Theres an insidious practice of folks simply emailing their contacts and saying, were hiring for X, know anyone? and never posting a job description. In the case of the Apple engineer job, the li sting was public, just hidden. It was publicly accessibly to anyone who had the curiosity to look through Apples servers. In this case, if you had the time to browse through a server like it was a treasure hunt, you were actually rewarded for your time and effort with a potential job.The most amazing part of all this is that if companies want the best candidates, theres a well-established way to do it write good job descriptions. Most job-seekers only scan a job listing for 49.7 seconds before deciding they wont be a good fit. Many women, in particular, shy away from job listings that emphasize aggressive words. Rather than puzzles and games, perhaps the best way to get good candidates is to tell them exactly what the job entails, and save everyone involved a lot of time.So what can job candidates actually do? Heres a quick list.Forget about searching for hidden job listings. You have better things to do with your time.Strengthen your career network so you can hear about jobs that c ome up by word of mouthDont apply for jobs as a numbers game. Think carefully about why a certain company or job is the right one for you, and concentrate your energy on making your case. If you dont hear back, see if you know anyone at the company who can put in a word for you. (See tip number 2)Always demonstrate curiosity about your work. At industry events or conferences, ask questions and find out what the next big thing is. Youll develop a great reputation that will make companies want you, and youll be able to sustain impressive conversations in an interview.Follow up after you meet someone cool at a networking event. Dont just ask to pick someones brain in an email, be specific about what youre trying to get out of an interaction. An informational interview? A job? Say that. Being succinct and direct works better than soul-baring, rambling emails.Tell everyone you know that youre looking for a job. People cant give you advice or tips unless they know that youre looking. As o ne Ladders reader advised about job hunting after layoffs, Calleveryone. You never know who has a good contact, who has admired your work from afar.Did you find your current position from a job posting or by word of mouth? Are you having trouble looking for a new job because positions are hidden? Come discuss atLadders Facebook Group, The Climb.

Workplace Warfare Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y

Workplace Warfare Baby Boomers, richtung X and Gen Y Workplace Warfare Baby Boomers, Gen X And Gen YPosted October 13, 2011, by Elissa Collier Lately, everyone is talkin bout your generation. With an age gemeinsame agrarpolitik of nearly 50 years between the oldest and youngest employees in some organisations, there is a broad range of perspectives, needs and attitudes floating around the office. Todays workplace is most definitely a multi-generational one and each generation has its own set of expectations, needs, values and working styles. While generational diversity in the workforce promotes a broader range of talent, it can often mean conflicting ideas and stereotyping the Baby Boomers think Generation X needs a stronger work ethic, Gen X sees the Boomers as self-absorbed workaholics and everyone thinks Generation Y is selfish and self-entitled. Recognising and understanding generational differences can help everyone learn to work together more effectively and transform your workplace from a generation war zone to an age-diverse and productive team. Baby Boomers (born between 1946 1964) If you were around during the Vietnam War, grew up watching The Twilight Zone and were a flower power child of the 60s, then you are classified as a Baby Boomer. Boomers make up 35 per cent of the Australian working population and are presently nearing the age of retirement. The Australian Bureau of Statistics predicts that there will be a shortage of labour and skills in the coming years, particularly in the education and health care industries, as the boomers start leaving the workforce. But elend all Baby Boomers are ready to start pottering around the garden all day and becoming champion lawn bowls players. Many are expected to continue to work well into their sixties and are currently interested in changing, rather than ending, their careers. There are many stereotypes surrounding mature age workers they are expensive, difficult to manage, wont learn new skills, r esist change and arent up to date with new technology. These generalities can make it difficult for mature age workers who are seeking new work or who arent quite ready for retirement. Glennis Hanley, from Monash Universitys Department of Management, believes that Baby Boomers are vital to the workforce today and should be encouraged to stay in the labour game as long as they can. Businesses need to employ the broad-based business experiences of Baby Boomers to foster and transfer cross-generational knowledge, says Hanley. Boomers are committed, hard working and career focused which has caused them to be tagged as workaholics by Gen X and Gen Y. The Baby Boomer work ethic is also characterised by dedication, loyalty and a willingness to stay in the same job for a long time. They have a lot to offer businesses with their work and life experience, skills and knowledge that many younger people cant offer. They tend to work longer hours and respect is paramount when managing a Baby Bo omer. Generation X (born between 1965 1981) Gen X encompasses the lucky group of individuals born in the late 60s but before the 80s really got started. They represent the pop culture of the 70s and are often referred to as latch-key kids (often left alone at home because both parents were working) which explains their independent, resourceful and adaptable approach to work. Gen X occupies a massive 60 per cent of the current workforce. They possess an entrepreneurial spirit, a do-it-yourself attitude and, in contrast to the generations before them, embrace change in the workplace. They are career-oriented but place a strong emphasis on family time and strive for a good worklife balance. They enjoy freedom and autonomy they work to live rather than live to work, which is often frowned upon as slack and difficult to manage by the Boomers, who prefer to do the long hours. A flexible workplace is a must for a Gen X-er and they value constructive feedback which both need to be taken into consideration when managing Gen X. Gen X-ers are seen to be in the best position in the job market at the moment as they are set to step up to the plate and fill the leadership roles when the boomers retire. Where boomers have the experience, Gen X-ers also have the qualifications to go with it. Brought up in an era of technological and social change, Gen-X is tech-savvy and open to change. They possess a different work ethic to the boomers Gen X thrives on diversity, challenge, responsibility, honesty and creative input, compared to the boomers preference for a more rigid, work-centric approach. Gen Y (born between 1982 2000) Known as the technological whiz kids in the generation world, these guys were born in the early 80s through to the 90s (some sources even say right up until 2003). They are predicted to occupy almost half the working population by 2020. Practically born with a mobile phone strapped to their ear and a laptop in their cradle, these guys are totally comfo rtable with digital technology. Excellent multi-taskers theyve had to juggle school, soccer training, dance class, computer games and other social interests, all whilst sending text messages they are impatient and require instant gratification as they have always had all the information they need at their fingertips via the Internet. Where boomers prefer face time, Gen Y prefers to communicate through platforms such as email, Instant Messaging (IM), blogs and text messages, rather than on the phone or face to face. Gen Y also prefers cybertraining, web-based delivery systems and telecommuting rather than traditional lectures or training. The typical Gen Y is smart, creative, productive and achievement-oriented. They seek personal growth, meaningful careers, and mentors or supervisors to encourage and facilitate their professional development. They have been constantly surrounded by choice and therefore dont tend to stay in one job for very long. They require constant stimulation a nd the opportunity to develop their skills if they dont get it, they will walk out the door and find another company quicker than you can say Gen Y. According to demographer Bernard Salt, the financial sector was seeing a 25 per cent turnover of Gen Y staff each year. With their whats in it for me? attitude, Gen Y focuses on entitlements, rewards, promotions and development, which has often led to gen Y bashing over recent years. Other generations see them as arrogant, selfish, lazy and unethical. However, provided with rewards, access to training and inspiring leadership, this generation will thrive and be the one to take business through to the future. So what about Gen Z? tischset to occupy roughly 10 per cent of the workforce by 2020, experts predict that with Generation Z there will be a return to values such as respect, responsibility and restraint. However, with the way technology is heading, most of the jobs that Gen Z will be filling have not even been created yet. The min d boggles.
